Dystopian view of tech-- NSA

I believe technology is harmful to society in terms of government oversight and global surveillance.   In the wakes of the Edward Snowden leaked information regarding the NSA's spying programs, such as PRISM, there was public outcry over the secret spy program, funded and executed by the federal government.

The PRISM program was leaked in a series of PowerPoint slides, outlining the NSA's deal with major technology companies in the U.S. to facilitate spying.  Some of these companies include Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, YouTube, AOL, Skype, and Apple.  With the program, the NSA receives a variety of the users information on these platforms; ranging from email, videos, chats, and photos. The NSA essentially forces these companies to leak data from their own user's accounts with no option to deny the request.

The main goal of these programs is for counter-terrorism intelligence, but I believe, along with many Americans, that it is an overreach of government power, unconstitutional, and sets a precedent for technology and privacy in the future.  While I am an avid user of technology and see a career in the tech field, I believe instances such as these are dangerous to democracy and must be limited in order to ensure a safe future for technology and the world.
